Experienced Cook & Gardener Looking for Caretaking Position
Local, late 20s female, experienced in organic farming, vegetable, herb, perennial, and container gardening, and fruit and ornamental tree planting and pruning. Excellent cook and baker. Skilled in home canning and food preservation. Experience with most animals. Can do many general building/maintenance chores including painting, use of hand tools, light masonry, split fire wood, etc. Willing to do all aspects of home-care, including cooking and cleaning for seasonal residents, as well as any other sort of work, such as errands, office, artist or writer support, some child care or education, etc.
Will graduate college with high honors in 2010, and a degree in anthropology and environmental sustainability. Looking to continue work in local non-profits to establish educational gardens, land trusts, and cooperative fisheries that encourage stewardship and sustainable food systems. Passionate about the preservation of cultural heritage through ensuring it is kept in use.
I need a work/trade situation for room and board to allow me to pursue this community work which generally pays so poorly. I have no pets, am a non-smoker, rarely drink alcohol. I have a 3-year-old son who is respectful and good-natured, loves to help me in the kitchen and play/explore outside. Prefer to stay within the Cape Elizabeth to Brunswick to New Gloucester triangle, but would consider anywhere in Maine or eastern-New Hampshire if the situation is ideal. Hello Nikkilee! I am so excited to have found you, I barely know what to write. I live in a huge old house on 23 acres in standish just 17 miles from the USM campus in Portland. I currently run a very small CSA for some friends at work. I work full time for the muskie school as a research analyst. So I can't go big with the farming yet.
We just completed the construction of a 24X44 greenhouse and are looking forward to experimenting with it this spring.
I have a dream of establishing a teaching and research farm, with community gardens, a CSA, Pick your own berries and a farm stand for starters. I have located an affordable farm site and plan to begin looking for funding and partners etc. immediately. Does this interest you? I'm thinking we have many interests in common. And possibly complimentary skills.
Also, we (my husband and I) spend all our spare time in the gardens and would love a good cook to make the meals our beautiful organic produce deserves to be in. And of course we could use help with house work as well but that is low on our priorities. We love children had 6 of our own and now have 7 grandchildren. We could offer you a room or two and a bath pretty much of your own (except for occasional company), and plenty organic food. lets meet and talk and dream a little some time.

Dear Sue,
It does sound like we have a great deal in common! I didn't put in my post that I am hoping to attend the Muskie School either next fall or in 2011.
I think we should get together and talk, but a concern for me is that I am hoping to find a private space. I think it would be hard (though not necessarily impossible) for Sylus and I to move into just a couple rooms from our apartment.
I am pretty overwhelmed with preparing for my last semester while also writing grants and the like for my summer projects. So I probably wont have time right off to get together. But my folks live over in conway so we are through Standish fairly often. I'll be in touch next time we go through that way, and maybe we can stop in.
