Eat Maine Foods!

Anyone involved in food policy at the city/town level in Maine? If so, can you share what is happening in your area?

Interesting article about San Francisco's progress toward food policy implementation.

Hi Alison - I guess you could say we're working on "farm policy" in Cape...perhaps food policy is on the future docket? Anyway, I think Toronto's stuff is very good as well: http://www.toronto.ca/health/tfpc_index.htm

Hi Lisa- what a great concept!
"The Toronto Food Policy Council partners with business and community groups to develop policies and programs promoting food security. Our aim is a food system that fosters equitable food access, nutrition, community development and environmental health."

It's brilliant to pair food security with environmental and social causes-- it can bring everybody to the table. Is there any such entity being planned for the state of Maine? We need one!

I agree Holly. I think there has been some work done with more on the way regarding a policy for Maine.

Who's doing that work, do you know? Do they have a website?

Contact Alison LePage on this board and she can probably put you in the right direction. I heard some mention of this work at a recent Eat Local Foods Coalition meeting but don't know the details myself.

The draft of the Maine Food Policy, submitted to the Joint Standing Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry in January of 2006, can be found at: www.maine.gov/agriculture/mpd/information/foodpolicydraft.pdf The policy has never been adopted at a state level which is why I was originally asking if anyone is involved in food policy work at a city/town level. It would be great to find some community models that could be shared.

Just read this document and I'm so psyched this work has been done in the State of Maine! Thank you for posting it. Any idea why it was not adopted?

Cape Elizabeth has started the Cape Farm Alliance which focuses on local farms and local food. We have a web page - see www.capeelizabethfarms.com/. Frank Miles

Holly;

I'm still getting to grips with what role the Chamber could play in this (I've been in the executive director's chair for about 4 weeks) but I would be very keen to work with you on figuring out how we can see some postive movement in the midcoast on policy issues.

Best Wishes
Dan Bookham, Executive Director

Hi John, You might try contacting the cooperative extension for your county. They should have a master gardener program and volunteers that like to help with these sorts of projects. Good luck! Laura
