I know, but I'm working on trying to be a little quicker with intuiting symptoms since they all "look" alike!  .  At least we have each other to consult and whine to!

Dang, those sick chickens don't give us enough time to chew our cud over their maladies.

Hello Ladies.  Just to let you know that Edith passed away last night.  In the end, I think she had an intestional blockage.  She had not eaten for a week.

I thank all of you for your support and caring.  This is the first time I have used a group/blog  to search for information and I must say, it has been a very good experience.

mine wasn't egg bound - it was an intestinal blockage and she died on the vet's table. He told me that they often will ingest things like small bits of wire, etc that will not move through and block them up...

Stacy Collins has also suggested it might be impacted or sour crop.  I'm exploring everything and will be checking for impacted egg within the hour.  Stacy said because her comb lost color it suggested she wasn't or didn't get enough oxygen.

I'll keep you posted.  I've had chickens for 10 years and haven't had problems until recently, when another chick I had got (I think) peritonitis).  She's still with us, barely.

Guess we're all learning.  Being "Mama Hen" isn't easy.

I hope she's not egg bound.  I've had 2 hens have this problem and neither has survived more than 2 days.  I even tried breaking the egg and gently removing the pieces but this is just too traumatizing I think.  Someone one on another chix forum suggested something a vet could give them if it was an egg issue but I can't find it right now to share.  Maybe a call to the vet?

Beth were you able to save your hen?

check for stuck eggs too - get a tight plastic/rubber type glove and some ky jelly. Lube a finger up and in it goes. I've done it - its actually easier than you'd think. If an egg is stuck you'll feel it. If so...not sure where you are.., there is a vet in SOuth Gorham who treats poultry. Also, you can try to get it out, too...

Perfect timing.  I was going to ask.  I may add a bit of rescue remedy in...it can't hurt.
