don't think the medicated chick starter will help, I've never used it and never had a health problem with colds because of it, however, if they are wheezing my feeling is your only home is some antibiotics, even just half a capsule of dog antibiotics sprinkled in their water has brought some of my full grown hens back to life, young chicks the dose must be way smaller, however, if they haven't died by now, they probably will live, I'd give a dose of chicken antibiotics if you have it, if not, try the dog stuff.

Sorry to hear you've lost some chicks. Just wondering, are the chicks warm enough? Are they huddled under the light? or overheated? away from the light as much as possible?
best wishes.

thanks bethany and deborah, i have switched them to a medicated chick starter will this suffice? or should they have a tetracycline?
none lost today.... they did start out in our finished basement with an infared light before I moved them up stairs fearing dampness might be the cause.

So sorry. It's heartbreaking to have them die. I'd get Juliette de Barclay Levy's book on animal livestock. She has a chapter on chix care and it's been helpful to me. Good luck.

Sounds like upper respiratory, I would give the the others antibiotics at the first sign of sneezing, I hope you have separated the sick ones to another structure. Any chance they are in a draft at night?

Hello fellow chicken enthusiasts. I have chickens for a few years now and am experiencing some major problems with my newest brood. The arrived from Murray/ Mc 5 weeks ago and I split the group with a friend of mine. Hers are fine but I have lost 3. 2 have died in the last two days of what looks to me to be pneumonia. The little things sort of hiccup constantly and the little buff orp. made a constant whinnying sound. Their little bellies seemed swollen almost bloated when they die. They have been on non-medicated chicken crumbles for the duration and although the homeopathic remedy Pulsitilla brought the two back from the brink of death they never really got over the air gulping thing. Any thoughts would be grand. I am going to replace their food today as when comparing notes with the other owner, who's chicks are fine- she mentioned their food might be sour.
Be well, hazel

My only other suggestion would be to see if some of the chicken people here in Maine--there are chicken clubs around. Maybe you already know of them. Maybe some one has experienced this before. Sorry.

Ann, let's compare notes, I just got 25 (I ordered 35) Freedom Rangers for the same purpose. Check in in a couple of weeks. Beth

Thanks Deborah, I have already contacted the Backyard Chicken folk, I fluctuate between beleiving I have an wayward industrial spy in the form of Chica Bin Laden in my flock and thinking there is something wrong in their diet. Today, just one cracked and it looked like a direct hit by another hern, but who knows?

PS I have a chicken that I rescued from the side of the road and I believe she was dumped there because she has a problem laying fully formed eggs. I really don't care as she is beautiful and a sweet thing, but then again I'm a softie. But she is healthy in general.
