This is a really, really good point. A farmer friend and I joke that we are 'moms with a beer in one hand and a coffee in the other - plus a kid in the lap'. I like the analogy to a credit card with a high interest rate.

Profile Information

Where in Maine do you live and eat?
Camden and Hope
What issues are you and/or your group interested or expert in?
organics, health and nutrition, food justice, farm to school, community gardens, hunger and local foods access, CSAs, local foods marketing and distribution, food coops
Other info about Me (please mention any food, fishing, agriculture, or community groups you are affiliated with):
I'm a holistic health and nutrition counselor in Camden. I work with individuals and groups and do workshops. I encourage people to become active and engaged in the process of choosing food for themselves and their families in a way that does not rely on information disseminated by the food industry.

I see this country in a health crisis and aim to be a paradigm shifter to shift individuals towards a healthy, more sustainable lifestyle and shift the culture away from the madness of industrial commodity food.
I like to put our food habits into historical, international and even political context to understand the larger forces that drive our preferences.

How to Get Hooked on Good Habits

For those of you who were on this teleclass (How to Get Hooked on Healthy Habits) did you go to the place you thought of in our visualization? Did you really go there?

There are places that just hold a special place in your heart. Here in Maine, we have the blessing of living by the ocean, with an incredible coastline. There’s a place in Rockport that I have always loved with a dirt road that snakes… Continue

Surviving the Holidays Without Gaining One Pound

Here they come! The holidays. A mixture of excitement, joy, overwhelm and reckless abandon. It creeps up on you every year, doesn't it? And yet you can see it coming.

Thanksgiving is first. The old standards come out, there's so much emphasis on the food... you actually try not to eat and then you get hungry and there are so many treats around... you're socializing while you're eating and then all of a sudden, you're stuffed! But it's the holidays and you're so "good" most of the time. You're S… Continue

My New Going Gluten Free Program

Hey foodies-
I just wanted to let you know that I have just put the finishing touches on a program I have worked hard to create. It's a teleclass recording that accompanies a workbook, so you follow along in the workbook while you listen. It also comes with a 28 page ebook called "How to Go Gluten Free Without Losing Your Mind."

Have you long-suspected wheat might pose a problem for you? Is that true for other people in your family? Well giving up wheat (and ALL gluten) can seem like a monument… Continue

Trick or Flu? Is the Sugar Worth it?

The time is here when we give ourselves permission to go to town with those mini candy bars "just for a few days." It just happens to be coinciding H1N1 hitting our state.

Yet we know that sugar is one of the triggers for lowering our immune system, along with alcohol, stress and lack of sleep.

While this "swine flu" doesn't seem to be more severe than a regular, seasonal flu (with some unpredictable exceptions) it is way, way more contagious than a regular flu.

Watch this… Continue

How to Grow While Overwhelmed

I have a renewed respect for single parents after the week I just had. My husband was just away for a week on an incredibly-well-deserved vacation (solo kayaking at Moosehead Lake.) I got everything done. I fed the dog and gave her her meds. I emptied the dishwasher and the dehumidifiers under the house. I fed, bathed and nuzzled my son to sleep every night. The I got up and cleaned the kitchen and finished all my domestic work by about 9:15pm, at which time I would start my other work.

I defin… Continue

We are in the editing phase. Although we are not done acquiring footage. Where I thought you could help is give us some ideas about how to get across to people who shop at (supermarkets) that although they think they are eating well they aren't. We will make our case on many fronts, but on the nutritional front we would like to make people aware of some of the downsides of the industrial, processed model. Of course there is a lot more but this is the core of it....

Hi Holly,

We have been working on a food film for the past couple of years. Your name came up through Lily Piel. We would like to have a chat, maybe at Zoot's some time soon. Have a look at cominghometorealfood.com to find out a little about us. Regards, Michael & Wendy
