About Barkwheats

Chris Roberts and Renée Johnson are the founders of Barkwheats, are all-natural, handmade buckwheat dog biscuits made in Maine. Sustainability is very important to me, and my treats are baked using 95-97% local ingredients. I take pride in using only the highest-quality local and organic ingredients possible for our hand-made dog treats. The packaging is made from sustainable products that can be tossed into your compost bin after your dog finishes a box of Barkwheats! Our boxes are 100% recycled and the inner cellophane bags are made from groves of cottonwood trees that are grown and harvested in a sustainable manner.

Why dog treats? My partner and I have 2 beautiful rescued black lab mixes, Baxter and Sabine, and since we enjoy eating fresh, local, and organic food, we thought that our dogs should enjoy the same health. After all, we want them around as long as possible ‘cause we love them!

Located in the Mid-Coast area of Maine (can you smell the ocean yet?), Barkwheats is especially proud to be among communities who understand the importance of sustaining local and organic agriculture.

Some Big Things For A Small Business

Being a small business owner is no doubt a tough thing to do. You tend to hear of people owning their own businesses because they want "freedom" or to "be at home with the kids". For me, sure, I wanted freedom from a corporate lifestyle I had grown sick of.
